Tyler's Weekly Book Review

This week room 10 read the chapter “Three old ladies knit the socks of death” From Percy Jackson and The Lightning Theif. Percy Jackson is going home to see his mom for the summer holidays. But on his way there, the bus brakes down and everybody gets off the bus. Across the road is a fruit stand where there are three ancient looking ladies knitting a pair of gigantic socks. Grover starts saying “Percy let’s get on the bus”. Percy ignores him and watches as one of the old ladies picks up a pair of wicked looking scissors and cuts the thread. Percy wonders what’s going on and asks Grover. But Grover just looks mournful, like he’s wondering what kind of flowers he’d like on his grave. Percy thinks that he’ll die. Will he die? A huge oil spill is spreading around the Gulf of Mexico after a B.P drilling rig exploded, killing 11 platform workers and 17 others. It is estimated to be gushing out 12,000 to 100,000 (1,900,000 to 16,000,000 litres) a day and effecting heaps of the sea and bird life.

Some of the things the B.P oil company have tried to stop the spill are:
-Pumping golf balls, shredded tyres, knotted ropes and hair into the well to stop the flow of oil
-Capping the well using underwater robots
-Recovering the oil using undersea siphons (pumps) and other new technology

What do you think about this whole situation?
How do you think this will affect the different people involved?

Tyler's Weekly Book Review

This term Room 10 has been reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning thief by Rick Riodan. It's a great book, so here's what's been happening. In the first chapter "I Accidentally Vaporize My Maths Teacher" Percy tells how he's a troubled kid and how his best friend, Grover, can't play sports because he has a mucle disease. Anyway, they're on a school feild trip and Mrs Dodds, acrabby old maths teacher, asks Percy to accompany her to the storage room for a talk. Upon entering, Mrs Dodds turns into a hideous flying creature and attempts to kill Percy. Mr Brunner, a crippled teacher, suddenly comes in with a ballpoint pen and throws it to Percy. When he catches it, it turns into a sword and Percy destroys Mrs Dodds. She turns into an explosion of yellow dust, which quickly evaporates into nothing, showing no sign anything had happened. When he gets back outside everybody says Mrs Dodds doesn't exist. Is he going crazy? Keep reading and you'll find out!
